Hello there. Now that I have covered life and the Universe, it is time I moved on to everything. But is life and the Universe not everything? Is there something else other than life and the Universe? As Douglas Adams was a devoted atheist, I doubt he meant anything spiritual. But I suspect he put it into the phrase so it sounded better. Life, the Universe and Everything sounds a lot more epic than life and the Universe.

But how can a theory of everything be produced. A theory of everything would suggest that everything is relative to everything else.

A ripening pear would go by the same fundamental meaning as Mozilla Firefox 3.5 RC1.

Stephen Fry would be governed by the same basic principle as a rotting onion.

In a World of these crazy hypothesizes, do we really want a simple theory of everything?

Yes.

"The Universe is big" - Douglas Adams

It is thought that the Big Bang theory will be disproved as Science develops and a more accurate picture of the Universe will emerge.

Could this mean that Science will develop an answer the the Universe to replace the current ’42′?

There is also a theory that nothing physically exists unless it has a conscious observer. By this logic, the Universe could not have existed before it spawned conscious life-forms.

That is also like the seemingly paradoxical theory of Schrödinger’s Cat. A cat that is both alive and dead at the same time? An intriguing argument.

On the subject of paradoxes there is the age old Grandfather Paradox. If the space/time continuum can be warped then it is thought that a person could theoretically go back in time. If they then killed their Grandfather before their father was born, then technically they should not exist.

The Universe is awesomely complex, and as Douglas Adams said, “there is a theory which states that if ever anybody discovers exactly what the Universe is for and why it is here, it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more bizarre and inexplicable. There is another theory which states that this has already happened.

For more of my ponderings on the subject of the Universe, look here.

Life is a very strange thing. What makes the molecules that make up living organisms different from any other molecules. How does Deoxyribonucleic Acid live yet potassium oxide does not? This is what Douglas Adams asked in the first part of the answer to life, the Universe and everything.

It was in 1953 that James D. Watson and Francis Crick said that they had discovered the secret to life, which they had partially, but this was not enough for humanity.

Tests were done by passing electricity through methane to see if they act like living cells.

Also questioned is the origins of life, some people think that the first cells were brought to Earth in comets as this was how water came to the Earth.

But what is the answer to life? Does life have an answer or a meaning? I think not. Life is an accident of the development of molecules to multiply and eventually build a fully functionally being, that is completely pointless.

Today was towel day (I hope you all carried your towels around with you), a day closely affiliated with the number 42. Is that the closest humanity will get to an answer to life, the Universe and everything or will humans actually gain a simple answer like this.

And what did Douglas Adams mean when he said the answer was 42? 6 x 7? Some people think it is the average number of lines per page but there is one person that knows the meaning of the number 42 and you can find him here.

He actually said that it is an answer to life, the Universe and everything so maybe if humanity did understand what Douglas Adams meant we would be a far more enlightened and knowledgeable race.

As Douglas Adams himself said, “You live and learn. At any rate, you live.”
